The full story is below the jump.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, (D), said that the Kentucky Medical Marijuana Program received 4,998 applications this week for medical cannabis business licences. WHAS11 reports. State officials plan to hold a lottery to select licensees for the program in October.

“When we launched the program, our goal to ensure that our licensing was transparent and gave everyone a fair chance to be a part of this exciting, new industry. Today, the results of this program are clear. The overwhelming interest in this process among Kentuckians is proof that the program has achieved its goal and is now set up for success moving forward.” — Beshear in his weekly Team Kentucky Update Release

The state received nearly 5,000 cannabis license requests. Of these, 4,076 were for dispensary licences. However, the state will award only 48 retail licenses. This means that less than 1% will be granted a retail license. The remaining applications are broken down as follows:

  • 190 applications have been received for a Tier II Cultivator License

  • 333 applications to obtain a processor license
  • Five applications for a Safety Compliant Facility license

The number of applications received is a good indicator. Kentucky The report stated that the medical cannabis license application fee has amounted to nearly $28 millions, and that just dispensary applications alone accounted for more than 20 million.

The application period for business licenses under the program Start July 1 According to the governor, it ended last weekend following a “big flooding” of applications at the last minute.

Beshear said, “We will have some challenges in getting through all those applications, doing it correctly, ensuring the process is fair, and getting through the lottery and getting up and going.”
