Bipartisan congressional members on opposing sides of the marijuana debate are united on one thing: they don’t believe former President Donald Trump when he says he will not support marijuana reform. The newfound support for cannabis rescheduling federally and banking access to the industry.
In a series on interviews with Marijuana Moment, on Capitol Hill, on Thursday, lawmakers weighed in on recent remarks by the Republican nominee for 2024 endorsing federal reform as well as a Florida marijuana ballot initiative that he claimed to support.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat who advocates ending federal prohibition, said the former president’s policy shift “sounds like Hail Mary” to her, adding that “I don’t believe he’s sincere” about his position.
Rep. Andy Harris, R-MD, also dismissed Trump’s remarks. The anti-cannabis Congressman, who has long championed an appropriations rider that prevents Washington, D.C., from legalizing marijuana, said, “I do not think it’s nothing” and that it amounted to simply “campaign talking.”
