A collision between three drug trafficking boats in the Moroccan waters of Larache (north) left one of those involved seriously injured, the Spanish government’s representative in the Andalusia region, Pedro Fernandez, announced, once again emphasizing the pivotal role the kingdom plays in the transcontinental trafficking of banned toxic substances.
Media outlets citing Spanish Civil Guard sources said that clashes between two boats used by international drug smuggling networks on the coastal strip between Larache and Moulay Bousselham (northwestern Morocco) on Friday night and Saturday resulted in serious injuries among the smugglers on board the boats.
According to the sources, two boats carrying seven smugglers linked to one of the international drug trafficking networks operating in the Strait of Gibraltar were stopped off the coast of Larache waiting to transport a shipment of “hashish” to the coast of southern Spain, before they clashed with another “phantom” boat coming from Spain for the same purpose, due to conflicts between drug gangs that compete for control of the maritime smuggling routes in the region.
The sources added that the third boat ran over the two stopped boats, causing the smugglers on board to suffer injuries of varying severity, before fleeing.
As a result, the seven smugglers headed towards the “Sancti Petri” coast in Chiclana, Cadiz province, by one of the two boats due to the serious injuries they sustained, before the Spanish Civil Guard was able to arrest them immediately after they reached land, although some of them tried to escape.
The health condition of one of the smugglers who was on board the boat is very critical, after he entered a state of brain death and is likely to breathe his last within hours due to the seriousness of the injury, while all those arrested were subjected to investigation in order to reveal the circumstances of the case.
Morocco, the world’s largest producer of cannabis, remains a major entry point for the drug trade that invades Europe and the rest of the world. In the absence of any decisive action by the Moroccan authorities, the country continues to systematically promote drugs, with local criminal networks facilitating the smuggling of these poisons by sea and land, contributing to the spread of organized crime and the destruction of generations both locally and internationally.
It should be noted that the coastal strip between Larache and the Moulay Bousselham region has witnessed an increase in the activity of international drug smuggling networks, which recently turned the region into a major outlet for smuggling “hashish” to the coast of southern Spain, after they were stifled in the traditional smuggling outlets, raising questions about how tons of drugs reached the coasts of the aforementioned region and passed through the road and bypassed the various Moroccan checkpoints.
