COLUMBUS (Ohio) — Ohio Governor Mike DeWine revealed more about the changes that Statehouse leaders plan to make to the recently passed recreational marijuana law. This was much to Democrats’ dismay.

Ohio voters voted and approved Issue 2, which legalized recreational marijuana for adults.

DeWine stated on Monday that “we have an obligation to carry out this.”

DeWine’s repeated statements that it’s important to accept the people’s will does not mean that Statehouse leaders can’t edit their will.

DeWine met with House Speaker Jason Stephens and Senate President Matt Huffman, both Republicans from Lima. They had breakfast together on Monday to discuss the changes they wanted to make to law.

DeWine said, “I don’t believe any of the things I have suggested that were done really fly in the faces of what the people voted for.”

DeWine’s priorities are threefold: safety for children, tax policies and road safety.

DeWine wants kids to be protected from weed exposure by limiting the places where people can smoke and restricting access to products such as edibles. He also wants to put guidelines around advertising.

Leaders also want to change the tax policy, by shifting sales tax from a program for social equity to local law enforcement. DeWine’s spokeswoman Dan Tierney said that this could help prevent high drivers.

“We must administer it, and make sure that it works, we must make sure that it is a fair tax,” said the governor.

While Republican leaders choose what they want to do, Democrats such as state Rep. Casey Weinstein of Hudson feel that the GOP is leaving Ohioans and them out of the discussion.

Weinstein said, “It is a slap to the face of Ohio voters.” “What I don’t like, and I see it a lot at Statehouse, is that decisions are made behind closed door. Ohio voters have earned their seat at the table.”

Voters chose 57-43% to support the recreational marijuana package being sold by advocates. He believes that the law could be clarified, but doesn’t trust Republicans to listen to people because they have a poor track record. (See: redistricting, August special elections).

Weinstein has introduced marijuana legalization legislation and has no sympathy for the rushed Republicans.

“Hopefully, this teaches them that bills with overwhelming bipartisan support should be heard,” he said. He noted that many of DeWine’s concerns would have been addressed and resolved under Statehouse legislation.

He also does not trust the GOP to keep the law as it is.

“I am afraid that this could happen, especially with the rushed schedule that the governor has set for the legislature,” the Democrat said.

DeWine wants lawmakers to reach an agreement before the effective date, because once the weed becomes legal and citizens follow a set of laws…

How do you put the genie in the bottle? DeWine asked.

The law will take effect on Dec. 7 with or without any changes.
