Rhode Island’s cannabis regulators are considering a change to the packaging rules for the state, which would allow the use of color. The current regulations only allow neutral colors in order to avoid attracting kids.
The full story is below the jump.
Rhode Island regulators have been considering changes to the packaging of cannabis in the state. This includes allowing color. Rhode Island Current reports. According to current regulations, cannabis packaging must only include neutral colors to prevent packaging from being appealing to children.
The Cannabis Control Commission (CCC), is also considering putting the name of the lab that grew the cannabis on the package. QR codes will be used on labels.
The Cannabis Advisory Board recommended allowing colors in July. In an interview with The Current, Stuart Procter said that allowing companies to brand their products would allow them to “differentiate themselves on the market.”
The proposed change of adding cannabinoid contents to the packaging will help customers better understand product profiles and businesses understand which profiles are popular with customers. Proctor said retailers are currently pricing and selling products based on THC potency. They may stop selling diver products if they have low THC.
He told the Current that it was “almost like a self fulfilling, destroying prophecy”. “As this number increases and more and products fail to meet the benchmark, quality products for human consumption are disappearing.”
The CCC is expected to announce its decision in the next two months.
