Researchers from Ohio State University College of Medicine reviewed 4,925 incidents of delta-8 THC exposure reported to U.S. Poison Control Centers between Jan. 1, 2021 and Dec. 31, 2022. The study found that 69.8% reported exposures happened in the Southern United States
The rate of exposure per 100 people increased from 0.53 in the year 2021 to 0.95 by 2022. In 2022, states that had banned cannabis use had a mean delta-8 THC exposure rate of 1.64 per 100,000 people, compared to 0.52 for states that allowed cannabis use.
The study concluded that the rate of 8-THC exposure reported by PCs was significantly lower in states where 8-8-THC is banned than in states where cannabis use is legal.
The lack of direct regulation of delta-8 THC increased adverse events. This resulted in a rate of 1,36 exposures per 100 000 population compared to 0.17 in states that outright banned products containing the cannabinoid.
Delta-8 THC, a hemp-derived cannabinoid, has gained in popularity in recent years. This is especially true in states that still prohibit traditional marijuana. But, such products are not recommended. The market is largely unregulated The potency and purity of the drug can vary greatly.
The majority of delta-8 THC exposures (52%) were treated and released. However, 15.5% required admission into a noncritical or critical care unit. Children under the age of 6 years old made up 50% of noncritical-care admissions, and 57.8% for critical-care admissions.
The study found that 38.6% exposures caused minor effects, 35.6% moderate effects, and only 2.9% major effects. A 2-year-old child died, but details are still pending.
The authors of the study recommended that all states adopt a uniform regulation of 8-THC.
