A 2-year-old German Shepherd tipped off Pennsylvania airport authorities to over 100 pounds of marijuana set to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, border officials said. Fredo, a narcotics dog at the Philadelphia airport, found 114 pounds of marijuana in vacuum-sealed bags while inspecting baggage for a London-bound flight, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in an Oct. 24 news release.
The four soft-sided suitcases belonged to a 49-year-old woman from Ventura, California, and a 24-year-old woman from Las Vegas, Nevada, CPB said. The two women were arrested and charged with felony possession with intent to distribute, officials said. “Bulk marijuana smuggling is illegal,” Cleatus Hunt, area port director in Philadelphia, said in the news release. There were 102 bags of drugs in the four suitcases, officials said. Marijuana laws in the United States differ drastically between states, with the drug remaining illegal at the federal level. In Pennsylvania, recreational marijuana is illegal. In California and Nevada, where both suspects are from, recreational use is legal.
