The full story is below the jump.

Steve Williams, the Democratic candidate for Governor of West Virginia and the current mayor of Huntington, said in a statement last week that he would support an initiative to allow voters to vote on legalizing cannabis. The Inter-Mountain reports. His opponent, Republican Attorney-General Patrick Morrisey said that legalizing cannabis was not the solution to the state’s drug use disorder crisis.

“West Virginia can join the growing list of states, such as Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, Washington, D.C., who have taken bold steps to legallyize cannabis. I believe it’s important to give the people their voice on this issue.” Williams, via The Inter-Mountain, said that one way to move forward would be to put legalization to the ballot, and let voters decide.

Williams cited Colorado and California as examples of where reforms “spurred economic development and created thousands” of jobs.

Williams stated in the statement that West Virginia could follow their lead and diversify our economy to attract new opportunities. The statement also noted the potential tax revenue from legalizing adult cannabis use.

A 2016 Reportage West Virginia Center for Budget and Policy has found that legalizing cannabis Tax revenues from the sale of adult products to residents of the state could be between $26 and $45 millions per year, and another $116 and $194 millions per annum from sales to visitors from out-of-state.

Williams noted that the criminal reforms related to legalizing cannabis would “reduce unnecessary arrests” and “refocus our law-enforcement efforts on more serious crime.”

He said that West Virginians were being arrested for non-violent, low level offenses in West Virginia. These crimes are not even considered crimes in some other states. This unnecessarily burdens the justice system.

Morrisey responded to his opponent by saying he was “laser-focused on doing everything possible to ensure we fight the opioid crisis in West Virginia.”

Morrisey stated in a statement that “that means addressing the Chinese Fentanyl coming into the country through the southern border, and getting the victims the treatment they need.” “I don’t want to add more drugs to our state.”
