New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D), signed a bill on Thursday to temporarily stop the sale of intoxicating products made from hemp. The state cannabis regulators will have 180 days to draft regulations governing the sale of hemp derived THC products to licensed cannabis retailers.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D), on Thursday, signed into law a measure to establish regulations for hemp derived intoxicating cannabinoid product. Asbury Park Press reports.

While adult-use cannabis has been legalized in New JerseyHemp products, such as delta-8 THC infused seltzers, which are technically legal on the federal level, because they are made of industrial hemp, have been sold outside the regulated cannabis markets, primarily in gas stations and liquor stores, even though they have very similar intoxicating properties.

The New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission will be responsible for regulating intoxicating hemp products under the new law. delta-8 THC Other intoxicating cannabinoids. The new rules also cover product testing standards and labeling.

“These products are often sold outside the regulated cannabis market, even though they may have similar effects and contain harmful chemicals or other contaminants. They are also sold without proper testing and labeling. These products are often readily available to minors. The status quo has to change and this bill will do that. — Murphy in a statement

Cannabis regulators will have 180 days to draft the regulations, but in the interim, all hemp-derived intoxicating goods must be withdrawn from the market. Philip Petracca of Bella Ray Beverage – a THC seltzer company – said in the report the policy change may target a few bad actors, but it is also detrimental to legal business owners.

“We are good actors.” We followed the steps that the state set forth to enter this business. They have required us to rent expensive warehouse space. We followed the process set by the state. We did all the investments as they asked. Petracca stated in the report: “And here we are.” “For us, this is economically devastating.”

Asbury Park Press reported Early this year THC seltzers made up 10-15% of the total sales at New Jersey’s liquor stores.
