How Green Rose Co.’s LED Retrofit Boosted Quality and Yield While Cutting Costs (19459000)

James Laski, TGB Consulting, and their partners designed a new cultivation facility for the San Fernando Valley in California. It was specifically designed to use HPS (high pressure sodium) lighting. The partners, who own several cannabis companies, made this decision based on their familiarity and knowledge of HPS.

They also wanted to make sure that this dedicated facility would be able to deliver the exceptional white-label, wholesale production they expected. Fluence LEDs were introduced to the project while it was still in Phase One, with the lighting already installed.

Exploring LED Lighting Systems
Taylor Kirk, a Fluence Horticulture Specialist, recalls his first contact with the facility. “My first visit was reassuring because, firstly, I would be working with growers who already knew how to maintain a proper environment.

The upfront cost was the first consideration for Chief Operating Officer Laski, and his partners. “But we then looked at the future and the cost savings, as far as not changing out bulbs every few cycles,” he explains. “Then, the heat in the rooms would be a lot lower so the HVAC wouldn’t be a big issue.”

Fluence LEDs for Veg
Green Rose’s LED trial in the veg-room resulted in a much higher growth rate. Laski says that Phase One is already underway and Phase Two is still being constructed. “We saw that it was a good idea, so we pulled the trigger, and decided to do that before we fired up that side.”

The HPS was introduced, and Fluence VYPRs were installed in a 1:1 replacement (based on the total light output). The team immediately saw a dramatic reduction in HVAC requirements.

“We have 35 tons of AC installed in that room. 5 tons are always on. Another 5 will come on intermittently, because the veg rooms are obviously running at higher temperatures. It was funny to see this and realize that we have a lot of HVAC on our rooftop that we don’t need. Laski laughs and says that it’s good to have backups.

“That room runs at least 18 hours per day.” Laski says that it’s the room that runs the longest in the facility. “The cost factor was huge. Not having 35 tons AC running continuously for 365 days of the year, it was a huge savings.”

Laski also emphasized the safety of LEDs: “We have had problems with HPS in previous facilities, where a lamp would burst and fall to the floor and cause a fire. Now your equipment is destroyed in the room.” It’s a huge advantage to have that stability and know that we won’t be dealing with these kinds of issues any longer. So, it worked really well for the veg.”

Moving to LEDs in Flower
After their success with veg, Green Rose decided to do a trial in flower using Fluence RAPTRs. These RAPTRs put out approximately 40% more light for the same wattage as a 1:1 HPS retrofit. Laski recalls that when they replaced their HPS with LEDs in one flower room, the AC “barely kicked” even though all the lights were on.

“We realized that, by not running all of our HVAC systems year-round, we would save a lot of money. Laski adds that the safety aspect of not having bulbs is important to him from a business perspective.

Laski also says that the ability to dim lights was a huge plus. “If something is going on during the flowering stage, you may need to dim the lights so the intensity of the light is not as high,” he says. “With HPS you lose your spectrum if you dim the lights. You can dim LEDs and keep the spectrum. So you don’t have to move anything. You can dim the light when your crew is in there to deleaf and so on, or to do any work.

Dialing it in with LEDs
Kirk and Laski are working together to optimize the retrofitted room. Kirk is adamant that the room be dialed in for optimal results. The focus is quality and making the necessary tweaks to achieve the same result as HPS. Kirk says that they are also increasing the weights by more than 20%.

The uniformity of the light in a space is a major improvement. Laski says, “We are pretty amazed by how much light there is in the room and how fluidly it flows.” The team chose Fluence’s wireless lighting system after consulting with Kirk. This allowed them to program different zones within the room.

“With HPS say that all the lights in your room are at 100%. Your outside rows will always have this fall off because there isn’t a row adjacent to it with another light area that overlaps. We were able, with the RPTRs to do the front and back as a zone and then the middle separately,” Laski explains.

“As the room started, we could have our outside zone a little higher than our inside zone so that the PAR would be fluid all the way from one wall to the other. “So, you don’t lose anything,” he says. “That’s a big part of why the room loses a lot weight.” The first and last rows of the room are almost identical, while the middle rows are usually where you find your best performers.

Focus on Quality
Kirk emphasizes that even though retrofitting is as simple as replacing one light with another, each case is unique. Each facility and genetics can react differently. “We’ve approached this with an open mind, as I do every time,” he says. “I try to understand what the grower is looking for and help them achieve it as quickly as I can.”

Kirk says that it’s all about how you get there. It’s great to have higher yields, but you need to be able sell your products at the same price. “We’re big on quality, but we also recognize that the retrofit — wattage to wattage retrofit — can result in major increases in volume,” he says.

Green Rose’s focus is now on quality, and the environment in which it grows. “Now that we’re at this point, environmental concerns are becoming more important. [crop] Kirk says that the steering is a process where we focus on the environment and how we can manipulate it to increase yield and growth, but also on the quality components such as color, cannabinoids, and terpenes.

“We’re trying to improve the quality components and ensure that we get the color they know we can get from the genetics that they’re using, while also improving the yield. Kirk says that’s a win-win situation.

Working with Fluence
Laski, a self-described cost guy, reveals that the Green Rose clone is now equipped with dimmable RAZRs. Three sections of four-tier shelves are interconnected by three ballasts, which run into a 120v receptacle connected to a 20 amp breaker. In as little as four weeks, they have seen roots.

“Basically, you can reduce a lot of this cost if you don’t spend all that money on wiring and conduit,” Laski says. “So it’s installation costs, material costs. This is a major factor. You can gain all of that by building a facility right from the start.

Kirk’s LED expertise is available to Laski at any time. Green Rose can compare what they see now to what they usually see with HPS and then adjust easily. Kirk works closely with TGB’s head grower Tony, as well as Rob and Shannon, the cultivation managers. Together, they worked as a close-knit group throughout the trial.

“That’s a nice thing,” he says. He says he can’t imagine having “that kind of marriage” with another company, where you could keep track of everything, including site visits, and really stay on top of things.

Laski says it’s nice to be able to call for technical support quickly and get someone who knows more about equipment than you: “Some companies, you have to try and reach someone, and you feel that you already know more about their equipment than what they tell you. Fluence doesn’t offer that.
