Cannabis advocates in Idaho have begun preparing a campaign for legalization of cannabis in 2026 after a petition to put the question to voters on medical cannabis legalization failed to collect enough signatures.

The full story is below the jump.

The Kind Idaho campaign, which was attempting to legalize medical marijuana in the state, shut down last month when it informed supporters that they did not have enough signatures for this year’s ballot. The campaign says it will push for a noncommercial marijuana legalization initiative that will prioritize personal consumption over a regulated market in 2026. Marijuana Moment reports.

Joe Evans, campaign treasurer, said Kind Idaho’s plan aims to avoid many of issues that the campaign has faced in the past while trying to drum-up support. These include concerns about an overly-regulated cannabis industry and the possibility of patient registries serving as a watchlist for the government.

Evans stated in the report that the petition this year was a “wall” of text that detailed the entire program, making it harder for volunteers and voters connect over the issue. The campaign hopes to gain traction by 2026 by keeping the next petition focused on personal liberties and simple.

“We don’t need to burden the medical field in Idaho by making it supervise quantities, quality and dosages. We don’t invite any industry, whether it’s medical or recreational marijuana, into the state because we aren’t actually legalizing resale. We’re only saying that you can grow it yourself and be in possession as long as you don’t plan on reselling. — Evans, via Marijuana Moment

A 2022 poll found, however, that despite a perceived reluctance, many people were willing to sign a petition for the legalization of medical cannabis. Two-thirds of Idaho voters Support Medical cannabis reforms in general.
