The crusade against X was launched in order to legalise personal cultivation of cannabis.

In recent weeks, an account called “medical marijuana in Cyprus now” has been flooding the platform with advertisements. All of the ads link to a petition at change.org.

The petition stated that Cyprus had “taken the first step toward legalising medical marijuana” in 2017 “allowing its use by patients with serious illnesses such as cancer”.

It said that the legislation had been “expanded in 2019” giving “hope to those suffering from chronic conditions like chronic pain, multiples sclerosis and other serious diseases, such as glaucoma, and even other chronic inflammatory disease such as Crohn’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.”

It said that despite the passage this legislation, “patients still have problems accessing cannabis for treatment.”

“Delays and failure to implement law due to government indifference, bureaucratic barriers, continue to prevent patients’ access to these treatments,” it said. “Patients who suffer every day cannot wait any longer,” the report added.

The petition outlined three demands, including the “immediate” availability of medical cannabis for patients, the adoption “of models of personal cultivation and usage”, and the issuance of licences to cultivate personal cannabis.

The petition now has over 600 signatures. Multiple tweets have been posted by this account. Most of them tag Health Minister Michael Damianos and the official account of the Ministry of Health, as well as Member of the European parliament Fidias Panayiotou.

Not everyone on Cypriot twitter has been enamoured by the ubiquity and ad-ads.

One user stated that “two out of three Greek Cypriots are smokers. You can buy CBD in Ledra Street but they spam us and break our balls with the’medical marijuana in Cyprus’.”
