The revised laws will both criminalize cannabis use in Japan and legalize medical products derived from the plant, effective Dec. 12.
Japan has already banned the possession and cultivation marijuana, but now it will also ban its use, with a maximum seven-year prison sentence for violators.
Currently, Japan doesn’t penalize cannabis usage, in part to protect farmers from accidentally absorbing its substances when growing it for hemp products. It reversed its position after growing concerns that the lack a ban on cannabis use was encouraging drug abuse among young people.
Japan will also allow the use of medical products derived from cannabis. Currently, drugs made from cannabis plants can only be used in clinical trials.
Patients groups have called for the availability of cannabis-derived cannabidiol medicine, which has already been approved by the FDA in Europe and America to treat conditions like severe epilepsy.
