Monitoring the Future Study – Cannabis and hallucinogenic use up among adults, Binge drinking down – Ganjapreneur (19459000)

The latest Monitoring the Future SurveyThe National Institutes of Health funded study found that in 2023, cannabis use, hallucinogenic drug use, and daily alcohol consumption among adults aged between 19 and 30 and 35-50 years old remained “historically high” levels, while the past-month and past-day alcohol consumption continued a decade long decline among those aged between 19 and 30 years old. Binge drinking reached all-time-lows.

According to the survey, binge drinking among 35 to 50-year olds is expected to increase in 2023 compared to five and ten years ago.

Nora D. Volkow M.D. (Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, NIDA) of NIH, noted in a statement that researchers “have observed that people at various stages of adulthood tend to use drugs like cannabis and psychedelics, and away from smoking tobacco cigarettes.”

In the survey, it was found that adults aged 19-30 years old reported cannabis use at rates of 42% in the last year, 29% the previous month, and 10% daily (defined as use 20 times or more in the last 30 days). Adults aged 35 to 50 reported rates of cannabis use of 29%, 19%, and 8% respectively. The survey found that 2023 estimates were not statistically different than those of 2022 but did reflect a five-year and ten-year increase for both age groups.

In 2023, the percentage of adults aged 19-30 who used hallucinogens in the last year will be 9%. For adults aged 35-50 it will be 4%. Respondents reported having used LSD, mescaline peyote psilocybin and PCP.

The survey found that alcohol is the most commonly used substance among adults. Alcohol use among adults aged 19 to 30 has shown a slight increase over the last five years. In 2023, 84% of adults reported alcohol use. The survey found that the past month drinking (65%), the daily drinking (4%), as well as binge drinking (27%), all remained at their study lows by 2023 for adults aged 19 to 30.

Megan Patrick, Ph.D. of the University of Michigan, and principal investigator of the Monitoring the Future study panel, noted that the data for 2023 “didn’t show…many important changes from the previous year” but that researchers will be able examine patterns and effects of drugs use throughout their lives as more of the original cohorts recruited as teens enter adulthood.
