Recent report by Turkiye’s General Directorate of Security revealed the PKK’s deep involvement in The global drug tradeThe group’s impact on Europe and America is highlighted.

The comprehensive investigation released on Friday has shown that the PKK has used illicit drug trade as a major source of funding to support its activities. It is a terrorist group in Turkiye and the U.S.

The report states that the PKK is a major player in the illegal drug trade, especially in Europe. The findings show that the group controls an important portion of the European narcotics market, generating billions in revenue annually through its trafficking operations.

The report shows that between 1980 and 2022, Turkish security forces carried out 470 anti-narcotics campaigns against the PKK, as well as other related entities. These operations led to the arrest of 1,694 people and the seizure significant quantities of drugs. Among the items confiscated were 96.289 kilograms of marijuana (212,280.91 lbs), 5,452 kilograms heroin, 140,698 tablets of Ecstasy, 121 million cannabis seeds, and various other drugs.

In a recent timeframe from 2016 to 2023 the Turkish Gendarmerie conducted 355 operations against PKK drug-related activities. These efforts resulted in the capture of 1 130 suspects, the seizure 182,105 kg of powdered cannabis, 123.272 kg of hashish, and 482,719 171 cannabis plants.

The operations reportedly prevented approximately TL685 billion ($20,1 billion) in illegal revenue.

Turkiye’s recent findings are backed up by international reports. Several reports by international law enforcement agencies show that the group can fund its bloody terrorist campaigns through drug trafficking within the EU, raking over $1.5 billion per year. It is dependent on its supporters in Europe and pro-PKK groups.

Europol’s latest EU Terrorism Situation & trend Report revealed that this group maintained “an apparatus which provided logistical and monetary support to its operatives and promoted its political goals in Turkiye, and neighboring nations.”

The European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addictions (EMCDDA), and Europol’s 2019 EU Drug Market Report, highlighted the PKK’s significant role in Europe’s drug trade. This included drug production, distribution, and street-level deals.

Europol’s report for 2022 identified the PKK, as a major player in money laundering and extortion. These activities were coordinated through the European Democratic Kurdish Society Congress in Belgium (KCDK-E).

In response to the revelations, the EU has extended sanctions against PKK and its affiliates.

In July 2022 the Council of Europe renewed their blacklist, maintaining restrictive actions against 13 individuals and twenty-one entities associated with PKK. These measures included asset freezing and economic transaction prohibitions with the designated groups.

The PKK is currently classified as a criminal group by the United States, which uses organized crime to finance its terrorist activities. U.S. authorities are looking for key PKK leaders such as Murat Karyilan and Cemil Bayik, who have been involved in terrorism and drug smuggling.

Turkiye warned European nations repeatedly about the PKK’s threat against public order. Europol, the EU’s law-enforcement agency, has classified the PKK as a “separatist and ethno-nationalist” terrorist group.

Germany is one of the countries where the PKK is a major threat. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Germany’s federal intelligence agency, has reported that the PKK is the foreign terrorist group with the most followers in Germany.

PKK members committed 286 crimes in 2023, including violent attacks that resulted in injuries and property damage. The report noted that more than 300 foreign fighters from Germany were recruited since 2013 and received training in Syria and Iraq.

Berlin has resisted doing more to combat this terrorist group, despite Turkiye’s repeated calls for its NATO ally Germany take stronger action. The terrorist group has been tolerated by the authorities.

The PKK has been able to recruit militants in Europe and finance its operations by exploiting legal gaps and vague policy in Europe. The perceived tolerance of PKK activity in Europe, including recruitment and propaganda efforts in France and Austria, has been criticized by European countries, especially Belgium. Despite the EU’s classification of the PKK as a terrorist organization, European nations have been heavily criticized for their inaction.

Turkiye, along with the U.S., and EU, has repeatedly urged their allies to increase their support for combating PKK terrorists. These appeals, however, have largely been ignored. The U.S.’s continued support for the PKK affiliates in Syria, the YPG has been a contentious issue. Critics claim that this support is not only a distraction from the fight against Daesh but also indirectly supports PKK activity.

Although the terrorist PKK is officially banned in the EU and its member states, it has been allowed in practice to demonstrate, raise money for its terror campaign and threaten or target locals in European nations. PKK sympathizers in Europe are quick to organize, carry out violent acts and clash with the security forces.

What is the PKK (Pakistan Kurdistan Workers’ Party)?

The PKK was founded in 1978 by Abdullah Ocalan, and other terrorists. Its ideology is rooted Marxist-Leninist. Initially, it was a nationalist group that advocated for Kurdish independence. They pursued their goals through political means. But by the 1980s they had moved to armed struggle.

Early in the 1980s, the group began using violent tactics against Turkish security officers and civilians. Over 40,000 people have died as a result of the group’s violent campaign, including women, children, and Kurdish citizens. The PKK uses bombings, assassinations, and ambushes to instill fear and destabilize the regions they operate.

The PKK is responsible for a number of high-profile attacks such as the bombings of tourist areas and kidnappings of foreign nationals. Its violent activities reach beyond Turkiye, affecting neighboring countries such as Iraq and Syria. It has recruited fighters in these countries and conducted operations.

Turkiye’s ongoing struggle against the PKK has been one of the most persistent and challenging conflicts in the country.

The response of the country to the PKK has been extensive, both in terms of military and security operations. The Turkish Armed Forces have conducted many operations against PKK strongholds in Turkiye as well as across borders into Iraq and Syria. These include large-scale deployments of troops, airstrikes, and cross-border raids against PKK bases in north Iraq. Specialized units such as the Turkish Gendarmerie or elite commando forces carry out high-risk missions aimed at disrupting PKK activity and capturing key individuals.
