The number of calls to poison control hotlines and veterinarians about pets ingesting marijuana is on the rise.
CHAGRIN FALLS (Ohio) — Legalizing marijuana in the United States has serious and unintended consequences.
The number of calls to poison control hotlines and veterinarians about pets consuming marijuana is on the rise.
Poison control calls
Dr. Renee Schmid stated that dogs are more sensitive to marijuana than humans and even a small amount or the THC component of marijuana can be problematic.
Schmid is an veterinary toxicologist with the Pet Poison Helpline, a 24/7 poison control service for pets and veterinarians, that serves the U.S.A., Canada and the Caribbean.
Between 2018 and 2022, the number of calls about pets ingesting marijuana increased by 750%.
The ASPCA hotline reported a 300-percent increase during the same period.
Schmid said that most of the calls they receive to their helpline are from dogs.
“For some reason I think cats are just a bit smarter,” she said. “They decided that they don’t like to be around it.”
She also said that most of the calls she received were from animals who had eaten edibles.
“If it is a brownie or cookie or chocolates, not many dogs can resist,” Dr. Schmid said.
Ohio: Anticipation
The Pet Poison Helpline looked at the number of calls coming from each state it serves.
The number of calls in Ohio about pets and marijuana has been increasing from year to year, at least since 2018.
The biggest increase in calls was between 2020 and 2021. During the peak of the pandemic in 2010, Buckeye State received 119.6% more calls about pot and pets.
Schmid expects to receive more calls now that marijuana is legalized in Ohio.
She said that as each state legalizes marijuana, the number of calls from animals exposed to it will increase. “I expect our call volume to increase significantly or at least the exposure calls to marijuana will increase.”
Dr. Carol Osborne is an integrative veterinarian at the Chagrin Falls Pet Clinic, in Chagrin Falls. She expects to receive more calls from pet parents who are concerned that their animals have accidentally consumed marijuana.
She said that she had noticed an increase in calls even before Ohio voters approved the ballot initiative to legalize pot in November.
She described a recent case in which a dog had consumed so much marijuana, that it was hospitalized and given IV hydration therapy.
She said, “It was around two in the morning when they (the owners of the pet) called me.” “They were frantic, and I was sleeping.”
She said that the dog acted like it had a stroke.
She said, “Which would be very worrying to anyone.” “Stumbling and staggering, they often cross their legs.”
Osborne stated that other symptoms include:
Lethargy
– sensitivity of noise
– dilated pupil
– dribbling urine
Osborne said that some animals may be agitated, or excited.
She said that most cases are mild to moderate and pets return to normal within 72-hours.
In severe cases, symptoms can be severe.
She said that if a pet ate two trays of brownies they could have epileptic seizures or even go into a coma.
Protect you pet
She also said that if you have a pot in the house, your dog will find it.
“When you and I walk into the room, we can see the room,” said she. “But when your dog walks into the room, they smell it,” she said.
How do you protect your pets?
Schmid and Osborne recommend that you keep a close eye on your dog or other pet during outdoor walks, and limit their time off the leash.
In your home, you should treat marijuana as a medicine. Keep it locked up and out of reach so that your pets cannot get their hands on it.
