Oregon State University’s Global Hemp Innovation Center received $5.5 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service for research into hemp-based food, beverages, and industrial uses of the plant. Hemp Gazette reports.
The grant money will be used to develop hemp genetics that are adapted to the growing conditions in the western United States. Researchers will also explore possibilities for biodegradable building materials and packing products — and even plant based food and drinks — as part a goal to “develop multiple product streams from Hemp with no leftover waste, just like the cotton, corn and timber industries have successfully done,” the Center’s Director Jeffrey Steiner stated in the report.
“Working together, we will be in a position to build a solid scientific and business basis for producing industrial hemp types that are not only adapted Pacific Northwest growing conditions, but can also be used by manufacturers to create new food, beverage, and biobased industrial products.” – Steiner, via The Hemp Gazette
The Global Hemp Innovation Center has received a second federal grant this year after the USDA awarded it to the research center. $10 Million in March Funding a study in partnership with 13 Native American Tribes to investigate the economic development of hemp, develop sustainable supply chain, and enhance hemp industry’s contribution to tribal and rural economies.
