The University of Michigan National Poll for Healthy Aging, released last week, found that 21% of respondents aged over 50 years old used cannabis products containing THC at least once during the past year.

The full story is below the jump.

The University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Ageing A study released last week revealed that 21% of respondents aged 50 and older had used cannabis containing THC at least one time in the past 12 months. The survey found that more than half of those who use cannabis products – 12% – do so at least monthly.

According to the survey, those aged 50-64, those in fair or poor health, and those living in lower-income families were more likely than others to report using cannabis monthly.

The cohort cited relaxation as the main reason for using cannabis (81%), followed closely by sleep aid (68%), feeling good (64%), pain reduction (63%), mental health (53%), or improving their mood (53%). A majority of respondents (56%) reported that they had discussed cannabis use with their healthcare provider.

In a recent statement, poll director Jeffrey Kullgren M.D. M.P.H. M.S. noted that even if your doctor or pharmacist does not ask about cannabis products, you should still provide this information. This is true whether you are using cannabis to treat a physical or psychological health concern or for pure pleasure.

In a press statement, he stated that “many prescription drugs and over-the counter drugs, as well alcohol, can interact and cause unexpected or undesirable effects.” “There are only a handful of conditions where we can confidently say that cannabis has a medical benefit, but this could change over time.”

Nearly 80% said they thought cannabis today is stronger than it used to be 20-30 years ago.
