A recent study published by the journal Drug and alcohol dependence reports found that cannabis usage in the U.S. increased between 2013 and 2020 from 7.59% up to 11.54%, but the youth rates remained statistically unchanged.

According to a study, cannabis use in the U.S. has increased between 2013 and 2022 for those with a college education and households earning more than $75,000 per year, but not for teenagers. Studying This month, Drug and Alcohol Dependence Reports published a report on the topic.

The study, based on data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), found that cannabis use overall increased from 7.59% to 11.54% from 2013 to2020, and again from 13.13% up to 15.11% in 2021-2022. Cannabis use among youth remained constant between 2013 and 2019 and 2021-2022.

Cannabis use increased “significantly”, during the study period, among adults aged 26 and older without a degree in high school. This was followed by individuals with only a GED or high school diploma, who went from 6.01% up to 10.48%. Those who had an associate or some college degree went from 6.18% up to 12.63%. Cannabis use increased among adults earning less than $20,000 a year, from 11.25% up to 15.46%; those earning between $20,000 and $499,999 a year, from 7.83% up to 11.88%; those earning between $50,000 and $74,999 a year, from 6.51% up to 11.64%; and those making $75,000 yearly or more, from 5.89% up to 9.71%.

The study found that rates among youth aged between 12-17 years old from 2013 to 2022 were statistically constant, at 6.07%-6.32 %, and adults aged 18-25 at 24.76 %-26.16%. Seniors remained at 4.79%-5.16 %. Cannabis use increased among all age groups including those aged 26-34 (22.04% – 25.46%); 35-49-year olds (14.25% – 17.23%) and those aged 50-64 (10.38% – 12.82%).
