CLEVELAND – Now that Ohio voters have passed Issue 2, allowing recreational marijuana sales, what can we learn from other states who have already been through this process? During our series, Marijuana In Ohiowe went to Michigan to talk to those who have already been through the process. They offered advice on stores, legal battles, schools, and more.

MAYOR SAYS APPLICANTS “ABUSED THE PROCESS”

Mike Webb, the mayor of Hazel Park, Michigan with a 15,000-person population just outside Detroit, has been through the stages of the legalization of marijuana. Mayor Webb said, “I don’t mind recreational marijuana.”

“It is just those who have abused the recreational process that are the problem.”

According to him, the abuse occurred when his town tried to limit the number dispensaries.

He told us, “We approved some…then went through the process with the 36 applicants for four places.” Pot prospectors sued them in court to challenge the approval process. “Operators are going to spend a lot on trying to get a licence, and even if the win, they still have to hold this real estate for years to come,” said Michigan attorney Barton Morris. Mayor Webb said that they would have to give in to the pressure and allow more pot shops to open rather than fight costly and lengthy legal battles. “Whatever you decide (in Ohio cities), you need to have a bulletproof law because the lawyers will come after you,” he warned.

OHIO SCHOOLS MUST BE PREPARED

Hazel Park School district said that it has seen more cannabis cases in schools. The attitudes toward marijuana have changed since it is legal.
