The Massachusetts State Treasurer Deb GOLDBERG announced this week that Shannon O’Brien was fired as chair of the Cannabis Control Commission. She had been suspended from her position since September last year.

The full story is below the jump.

The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission Chair Shannon O’Brien has been fired this week after allegedly making “racially insensitive, ethnically insensitive and culturally insensitive” statements. CBS News reports. The former chair was suspended in September last year.

Goldberg said that she fired O’Brien this week after reviewing hundreds pages of testimony, and after many meetings and evaluations. Goldberg claimed that O’Brien had made a sexist comment about someone with Asian heritage.

“The Chair committed gross misbehavior and demonstrated that she is unable of discharge the powers and responsibilities of a CCC Commissioner. I do this with deep regret, because she has an extensive history of public service and I expected that when she was appointed she would lead the Commission in a competent and appropriate manner. I expect that my appointee will reflect the important mission of CCC, and perform in a way that incorporates the professional standards required in today’s workplace.” — Goldberg in a statement via CBS News

O’Brien — Who? Filing a lawsuit Last year, she filed a lawsuit against the state, claiming that she was removed illegally. She has denied these accusations and challenged her removal.

Max Stern, O’Brien’s legal counsel, told NBC News this week’s decision “whitewashes unequivocal proof that would lead any fair and reasonable fact-finder to conclude there are no grounds to remove her and would immediately restore her to steer the rudderless CCC shipwreck.”

In July, Massachusetts Inspector general Jeffrey Shapiro called for state officials to Nominate a receiver After many months of regulatory delays, the CCC is now under supervision.
